The Quincunx and The Semi Sextile

Quincunx and Semi Sextile

The Semi Sextile and The Quincunx are considered Minor Aspects yet I put them into a class of their own. They are cousins and they are considered 12th Harmonic Aspects: the 30° “easy” Aspect set family. This set also includes the Sextile: 2 x 30° = 60 and the Trine: 4 x 30° = 120°. 

The Semi Sextile is 1 x 30° and the Quincunx is 5 x 30° = 150°. 

30° + 150° = 180°: What I find interesting about this is that whilst in the opposition one can see it, it’s in clear view and its conflict is clearly apparent to the person. The Quincunx is kicked off to the side of where an opposition would be if a planet were tenanting that degree. Making a Quincunx the view to the side of what appears clear and straight on in the Opposition. Much like the negative space in design and images. The Quincunx hawks either side of the opposition in it’s negative space just waiting to begin the disconnect in preparation for the Transiting opposition which will be next and then to add insult to injury it has another go on the other side of the opposition, just to make sure that we understand the disconnects we had to make to balance the call of the transiting Opposition. 

Where the Sextile and the Trine share Element or Masculine Feminine, the Semi-Sextile and Quincunx share nothing by Mode, Element, Masculine or Feminine. Which sets them apart into a new category that needs a new name. 

I have called the Semi-Sextile evil and the Quincunx is the most baffling Aspect that Astrologers struggle to delineate. 

I have come to see the Quincunx as the ability to see the parallels in what others see as divergent and sharing nothing. It certainly causes Separations when it operates by transit - I’ve started to see it just like the worst versions of Saturn transits as to the isolation yet it mimics Uranus transits in how suddenly it can turn events or in the Natal it operates to provide those moments of illumination as the parallels merge and the solution becomes seen. It operates like Neptune in its mysterious nature and like Pluto in what lies under the surface and can bring massive changes as one is just cut off without warning or explanation, leaving one in a daze trying to work out what “the” ... just happened. Not a Minor Aspect by any means in my view. 

The Semi Sextile and The Quincunx are something to keep a keen eye on especially by Transit and Progression.

These delineations are pure Mars in the houses – unimpeded by aspects from other Planets or Points. As most charts will have aspects to Mars from other Planets you will need to edit these delineations where necessary as per each charts planetary pairs with Mars. The Sign on the cusp of the house Mars is in and the Planetary ruler of that house in the individual chart will also need to be considered, as will the sign: element/mode that Mars is in. If you are serious about learning Astrology read them all not just yours.

Mars in the First House

Mars in the first is self-initiating, they like to be in charge of themselves – self-directed and self-motivated. They possess the sort of get up and go that can exhaust the average person trying to keep up with them. This position of Mars naturally assumes that they are there to direct others, and to get everybody assigned to their roles and up and moving and doing. They can be quite demanding people not only on themselves but anyone in their immediate vicinity. This is an alpha position of Mars its go hard or go home, its do it now or rack off and let me get on with it, its impatient and wants everything now, if not yesterday! A well-handled Mars in the First is the energy that can spark the beginning of many an enterprise like an entrepreneur with the conductor’s baton in their hand. As leaders they have what it takes to inspire others and to make demands on others in such a way that they feel compelled to act. As workers they like positions where they act independently and work without supervision. They often direct their need for physical activity into sporting pursuits but not necessarily team sports. Learning to play well with others will ultimately have to be dealt with sooner or later, or there will be no one left to direct or assign roles to. They have a strong connection to their sexual identity and consider themselves a sexual being in essence and will not be happy if they are not getting “any”. This is a position that can enjoy the chase more than the catch and will be caught by another who is willing to be chased and caught and chased again. As once it’s not exciting anymore and without challenge this placement losses interest and moves on. To Mars in the first life is meant to be exciting, to feel the rush of adrenaline whilst daring to go where others hesitate, they want to forge ahead and conquer obstacles one after another after another. These people want to win, they thrive in competitive environments.  It’s a strong position as it’s in its natural house and that house is Angular – the closer to the Ascendant it is the stronger the energy is and the more noticeable it is as it is projected out as the persona. These people like to shape and craft their bodies so as to appear physically fit, trim and terrific. They also craft their bodies to attract sexual partners and are attracted to fit strong people who enjoy exercising and being fit and strong too.

Mars in the Second House

Mars in the second is self-sustaining, they like to protect themselves and will take whatever initiative required to bring home the income needed to sustain them. They enjoy preparing food and understand the connection between food and sustaining the energy levels of the body through food. It does not imply health food though and could just as well be loading up on carbs and sugars and missing the fibre, protein and vegetables. If anger has been internalised this position could eat to suppress anger, motivation or even the libido. There is a steady flow of energy that can pace itself and enjoys working in areas where physical hard graft is needed to get through the day which is when loading up on carbs and higher energy foods would be needed and burned over the working day. Willing to fight for their beliefs and protect their values these people can have rusted on values that they are willing to go into bat for and if challenged is when their anger/will to fight will comes to the forefront so as to defend their views, otherwise they are quite restrained and like to maintain amiable relations with everyone. Money motivates these people, it drives them – if these people do anything for free – they really, really like you and probably wouldn’t mind going in the intimate direction with you. As that’s the other thing that will motivate them – the person they are doing the big “it” with. Sharing the same values and beliefs with whoever they are committed to be intimate with is important to this placement. That moment on the first date when their date utters contrary  values or beliefs – that’s about the moment when any desire for sex just left the room … and that date doesn’t end well. Expect to shower before sex with this placement and if the bedroom is not clean and stylishly decorated they may have less desire to go there with you.  These people prefer to be seduced than doing the seducing and good food in a very expensive restaurant is a good mood starter for them. This is a passive placement for Mars in an Earth House, it is the turtle not the hare … so don’t rush them. “I like a slow hand” was a lyric written for these people. This is the long haul use of energy and that means slow sensual foreplay, slow to start, slow to express anger and slow to take action. They will take action once they are comfortable and ready, as wasting their energy is really not an option. Regular exercise and the slow sustained routine use of the physical energy can achieve good outcomes for the person.

Mars in the Third House

Mars in the third is restless and busy, preferring not to sit still and directing their energy in more of a splatter than a straight line of activities. Having many things on the go at once or having to be in two places at the same time and learning not to double book themselves is some of the mutability of the natural third house. This is the placement of the knee shaking up and down, the foot tapping up and down, the nervous fiddling with objects or the incessant need to chew gum. They just don’t like sitting still. The art of debate/ argument and negotiation is where we find the fight in these people – it’s like sport for them and they can be quite competitive and driven in this area or they could be bored and looking for some active discussion and exchange of ideas or simply mischief to get a reaction. The arsenal for this placement is strategy, intellect and an ability to read the body language of others. Puzzles and solving puzzles attracts their energy, be it a Rubik’s Cube, a crossword or general knowledge quiz these people enjoy the challenge and where they enjoy winning the most and feel competitive. Chess is the game here although being nimble on the feet can lend itself to gymnastics, football of any kind along with track and field sports, cycling or skating. They are quick on their feet, quick to act and have reflexes that sense physical threats and can act defensively with almost automated precision. The voice will require calibrating at times as the tone can be delivered in such ways as to stir aggression or opposition in others - if it’s not handled well. Anger cannot be easily hidden in the voice for this placement, they are better saying nothing if they don’t want to argue or get into a verbal fight or sparring match. Road rage was likely invented by these people as their Mars sits in the passenger seat of any vehicle they are driving, they can be very impatient road users and can also feel quite pissed off when the bus or train is late - if they have not got their anger management in check.  Defending or fighting with siblings and sibling rivalry will be areas of concern and any issues in this area can affect the overall motivation and positive carriage of Mars in the third. These are the merchants and managers of retail sales, the deal makers, brokers and closer of the commercial world of trade. Often skilled with the hands it is the placement of a trade’s person or crafts person.  If you are intending on being intimate with a Mars in the third person, you might like to consider a sound proof room or an isolated cabin in the wilderness as it’s in a very verbal house – talking dirty and whispering sweet nothings into their ear will escalate their pleasure. If you can’t talk during sex you won’t last long with a Mars in the third person.  It’s also the most likely placement to lose their virginity parked in a car somewhere.

Mars in the Fourth House

Mars in the fourth house is driven by the clan, by the family, by their homes. Their motivation is derived from the needs of the people who are closest to them – the people who they live with; spend their private time with or those whom they keep hidden from public view. The right to defend your home and family is born from Mars in the fourth, to protect your land, your heritage, your family name are all strong themes for these people. These people may struggle with being assertive and direct outside of the family and find themselves ducking for cover if called upon to do so. It’s not to say they cannot learn to be more outwardly assertive – it just doesn’t come easy or naturally to them with this placement of Mars buried at the bottom of the chart in the midnight position: dependant how close it is to the IC/Nadir of the Chart. As it is an angular house - the closer to the angle the stronger the energy and the need to resolve the conflict of being more passive than assertive in the career or public life. You will not see this person get angry unless you live with them and if you do and it was you – expect it to take a long time to resolve. This placement is more likely to have the gym at home or prefer a small less crowded gym as they really do prefer to sweat in private. They like to do their own home maintenance, tend to the garden, grow flowers or veggies and can also work in the homes of others as that is where they like to use their energy – in homes, on the land, for the land, in home improvements or services attached to the home. They also want to put their energy into the family and they take initiative better when they have the support of their families. Working with family members or with families in a professional sense will also appeal to them. Family business and passing it on to the next generation is the motivation of many a Mars in the fourth.  Intimacy for this placement is private and is enduring, it is not something they want discussed or want to talk about – it’s between their partner and them. It is a position that needs to choose carefully who they bestow their intimate hearts to, as they do not let go easily or quickly if the relationship ends. If you find yourself with one be true to them because when they said “in sickness and in health from here on in” – they really, really meant it!

Mars in the Fifth

Mars in the fifth is the determination of the self to shine and to be acknowledged by others for their creativity and drive to make things happen for themselves. The actions they take are all taken to further their identities and defend who they are. They are driven to seek fun, to enjoy life, to follow the Sun as they say – these are our extreme adventurers – the bungey jumpers and wild rapid riders. Risk is a thrill for this placement and without tempering from elsewhere in the chart; this could be one of the more dangerous placements of Mars regarding the safety of the individual whose chart it is. This is also a placement that can fall to the ’house’ in any Casino due to recklessness yet it is also a placement that can play the ‘house’ and come out on top against all the odds – not because they are lucky it’s because they like to be daring, they want the rush, they chase the thrill, they want the aggrandisement of the winners circle to be acknowledged and receive attention. Equally any area of life where they direct their energy it’s because they want to be seen and they want to be a leader in their field. The willingness to take risks to get to the top will run throughout most choices as to where they direct their energy. Like the Pied Piper they lead with their performance and attract followers which translated to the modern world could give rise to Social Media stardom. This position enjoys being the figurehead of any organisation or group, a Master of Ceremonies or the director of the show, an event organiser or wedding planner, the social climber and all the competitive bitchin that comes with it. To say they enjoy drama is a bit of an understatement as drama motivates them and provides them with many an opportunity to once again manoeuvre all the attention onto themselves. The best way to get Mars in the fifth on board to help you, is to point out to them how they will benefit from helping you, not how you will benefit as they are motivated by what they get not you. The house of lovers with the planet of sex in it – the players of the field, the studs, the temptress’s, the seducer’s, the lover of lovers – if this placement shuts down on seeking intimacy there is something really wrong going on for them. Sex is like petrol for them and staying in a sexless relationship is just not comprehensible to this placement of Mars.

Mars in the Sixth House

Mars in the sixth is a hard working individual who likes to use their energy in as productive a way as is possible every day of the week. They like to have order and like to plan where their energy will be directed each day, each week, and each month. These are the diary planners, they love scheduling in appointments and like to know exactly what they are doing each day with an exacting precision that would drive others of us just plain nuts with all the details. Yet when this energy is applied to book keeping or to proof reading, the rostering of staff or the diagnosis of illness or any other conundrum requiring forensic like assessment of detail Mars in the sixth is the go to person for any type of logistical operation or problem solving. The military or law enforcement suits them as they don’t mind a job with a uniform, order and the capacity to direct others. Attending to the health through physical exercise is therapeutic for this position of Mars; like walking, or catching a game of tennis after work. This is not a sedentary worker – if you have Mars in the sixth and you sit at a desk all day and fail to move around it will lead to complications in your health and wellbeing.  It’s not to say you cannot work in such a job as long as you have active activities after work like hitting the gym, playing a team sport or volunteering some community service standing on your feet. The body needs to be active every day somehow with healthy nourishment and physical activity with this placement. Even when these people take a holiday they will still fill their days with a gruelling schedule of tourist attractions. Idleness to them is the enemy. It’s a waste of resources and not an industrious use of time. This placement also prefers to work behind the scenes rather than front of stage, figurehead is not their thing. Assistant to the figurehead and being in charge of organising any of their requirements is more of a role that suits them. When it comes to affairs of the bodies sexual needs these people are attentive and sensual lovers regardless of the sign it is in. They will prepare and set the scene so everything is in place for intimacy to proceed without a hitch. Spending the entire day in the arms of the partner is not unknown to this placement. It charges them up and gives them a boost of raw untamed passion to hit the road running and tackle the day ahead. These people love to start their day with an orgasm every morning.  They are likely too tired at days end to go there hence the preference for intimacy in the mornings. This is also a placement that likes scents and aromas and expects cleanliness and personal hygiene standards to be high on the list of priorities in anyone they are close to on a daily level or close to on an intimate level.

Mars in the Seventh House

Mars in the seventh is motivated by their close friends, close associates, affiliates and partners. They will also be highly motivated by the needs and demands of their spouse. They are attracted to people who have a bit of initiative and brazen courage. They prefer people who are straight forward and direct as they simply don’t have the patience with others to waste time waiting for them to get to the point. They also like to assume the role of the director of the relationship with others – they enjoy organising social events and meetups with friends, they enjoy friends who like to do things rather than friends who just sit around.  They like working in a team with others but ultimately would prefer to be in charge, independent and unsupervised – even if they are not in charge they have the knack of manoeuvring things their way in the end.  This position is not without charm indeed it tones Mars down a bit, they are a little less insistent and demanding and when they are in roles where this is required they can stir others to action in such a way that they are thankful for the opportunity and are really happy to help. The fist is Mars and the velvet glove is the seventh house. These people can use this skill with people to negotiate, advocate, represent or mediate between contrary parties as this is the area where they are stirred to fight but that fight is indirect not direct action; it is for others not themselves unless something else in the chart is more self-inclined. They fight for others in positions such as in the justice system or by representing others who cannot fight for themselves. Standing up for others is easy for them, standing up for themselves in close relationships maybe more of a challenge as the energy can be projected onto the spouse or friend. If this is going on in a lower expression of the energy they can attract arrogant rough bullies and end up being bossed around in the marriage or friendship until the last straw comes and they walk away from the relationship or explode in violent fury. If this happens we enter the territory of open enemies and when love turns to hate Mars becomes combative, it is stirred up and the furies are unleashed in the family law court, the District Court or that of Petty Sessions – all the way to the highest court if this energy is triggered by hate or the seeking of justice.  In matters of intimacy it is in an angular house so they are not backward in coming forward when it comes to wooing the most attractive person in the room. They like to play a little of the chase, throw in some charm, a little compliment or two and a hint of conversation as to their physical abilities if they can manoeuvre the conversation and flirting that way. They will have a tried and true strategy to go home with someone if in the dating game or that special someone – either way they like ‘it’ after being out and social. If you are chasing one and are the courageous type don’t hold back from these people they like direct and courageous partners.  

Mars in the Eighth House

Mars in the eighth is a straight forward position, it doesn’t take crapp from people and if you try to do crapp at them be prepared for their Roth! This is a very competitive placement of Mars and any challenge to go up against someone else is one of those gleeful moments for these people. If you want someone to fight for you – this is the person who enjoys doing it. Whatever their profession - it involves hard negotiation and skilful manoeuvring and never underestimate their arsenal of tactics, contacts and the ability to go where others fear to tread. They love pushing others to their limits physically and emotionally, they love other people who can go there and enjoy it too. They make excellent coaches/ mentors for this reason. When it comes to money these people do well working in the financial sector and money markets where all that competitive energy and ability to take calculated risks has a valid platform to live with. Whatever the vocation these people can strike a deal to get other people’s money out of them with finesse and skill. The trail behind them can resemble a battlefield of fallen opponents dependent upon what level of expression it’s operating on. If that is a shelf of sporting trophies or a pile of successfully negotiated – money in the bag contracts - that’s all good – it really is dependent upon which way the energy has gone and other factors in a whole chart to determine the detail on an individual basis. This placement has a rather insatiable appetite for sex; it’s an everyday to several times over a day placement – if they can find a partner with as much lust in them as they have. This can lead to one honeymoon period after another and the continual seeking of new partners to keep the thrill of sexual interaction active and constant for them. Every encounter with another person is a possible conquest in one way or another, putting the contest to rest is more the challenge for this placement. Learning to disarm their competitive nature when required with others and to delegate tasks so as to make better use of their energy is part of this placement. As it eventually realises that teaming up is part of leadership. Mars is where we want to be leaders and in the eighth its other people where leadership falls but you cannot be a leader without those to lead. The trials and tribulations of endings and new beginnings play out through initiative, anger and sex with Mars in the eighth. Mars takes risks with others and with other people’s possessions, money or any other resource another may have or they are responsible to manage in a professional or work sense. On a practical level this placement starts something hands on the baton to others and starts something else therefore the need for endings and new beginnings is fulfilled in a positive way for them and for others.

Mars in the Ninth House

Mars in the ninth is motivated to learn and to experience life.  These people are challenged by what they do not know which motivates them to find out, to learn and to study so as to satisfy their insatiable urge to know and to grow. Each subject conquered leads to a new subject to be conquered and so it goes on throughout life as lifelong learning inspires them. These people probably wrote all the lines about being on “top of your game” Each new experience or foreign land they tread through leads them to more learning and gathering of information and knowledge and yet more destinations they haven’t been to yet. They will also have the urge and motivation to share this with others as teachers, trainers, travellers, adventure guides, bloggers or Social Media Stars. Here Mars wants to lead in education, in world affairs, in establishing philosophies or policies or mission statements or to stir the hunger for knowledge in others in whatever vocation they choose to direct their energy towards. These people also like to lead others through journeys of understanding via physical activities or active discussion and debate. This is the energy that can take physical exercise to the point of an illuminating experience and fellowship to the same level as a religious experience and congregation. When the body moves the mind ruminates with this position of Mars – physical activity for a writer with this position for instance would assist to refresh the mind and overcome any blocks in their work. These are the people who pace from this side of the room to the other or walk around and around their desk trying to fathom out a problem or think through a solution. Yes these people can think best on their feet and moving, using their hands, arms and whole bodies to gesture what they are thinking or talking about – communication is connected to their physical body. Active and participates in learning environments will work best for them. Sitting still for long periods will never work for this position of Mars. If any position of Mars needs a desk that they can stand up at – this is it! When it comes to matters of the lustful urges of Mars here it is attracted to foreigners and people of other cultural backgrounds, above all else they are attracted by  a meeting of minds before this baby revs up for some bedroom gymnastics. Demographics, global location or cultural barriers are irrelevant to this position; indeed challenges that overcome barriers excite this position into full charge ahead – game on! As with everything they want to go out there and to embrace the entire world and its entire people to learn and to experience as much of life as they can and to do that in a way that can be shared with and alongside others.

Mars in the Tenth House

Mars in the tenth is driven to be seen and to have a reputation of being an active go getting motivated person who gets others moving and motivated. These people are achievement driven and competitively focused. They enjoy adversaries and will be driven to climb the career ladder or organisations in public life. They do well in organisations or community positions that fight for others or direct others to take action in some way. Natural leaders these people like to be in charge, they have public bravery and like to put effort into any career that they choose. A job that involves some good old physical graft to get the job done suits the energy of Mars here. They can be known for how hard they work or be acknowledged for the toll their life direction has put upon their bodies.  This position enjoys the thrill of charging ahead, in doing, in getting things started, up and running with entrepreneurial flair whilst running the risk and winning is what gets this placement out of bed in the morning. Winning or failing this position has the will to do it over and over again as every failure will lead to a success – it’s the process they are connected to and their brazen ability to achieve in the face of the naysayer that motivates them. Tell them they can’t and see them do a can right back at you! Overcoming the odds is really quite a talent with Mars in the tenth.  They do things in public to be seen, to develop and foster a reputation, driven by the need for success and recognition for their efforts. This person likes to be out of the house experiencing life with others in public settings of any kind. Any opportunity to go somewhere or organise others to come together to do something or go somewhere is right up their alley way of talent. This is the voice that says get off the couch and come out with me; let’s do something!  This is not an idle placement of Mars far from it their life direction and purpose is connected to their physical energy; will to fight and their sexuality and how they express that sexual identity in public. Shaping and crafting their body to be as fit and physically attractive will be important to this placement. Their ability to allure sexual conquests begins in public and how they shape that public image.  It’s not out of the ball park for this placement to attract sexual partners from their career sector or enjoy sex in the workplace just for the thrill of it! Industrial relations and sexual harassment laws have curtailed some of this placements flirtation in the workplace that previous generations had to deal with. When comes to wooing Mars in the tenth at work – discretion is their word and in other circumstances a nice restaurant where you can both be seen with everything organised and ready to go if the night goes that way. This is also a placement that likes personal hygiene and showering/bathing before sex.

Mars in the Eleventh House

Mars in the eleventh is motivated by their hopes, ideals and dreams. They are influenced to act by the groups they are involved in. They like to take up the fight for good causes or any cause that hooks them. They enjoy the challenge of working the crowd, organising the crowd and leading the crowd … as long as they are active with others in whatever they do. They seek thrills from an audience formally or informally, any more than two is a group that can do things together. Sporting groups and sporting teams, social groups and social directors these people enjoy engaging alongside others as it makes them feel motivated and inspired. Putting together everything for a party, a gathering of any sort, a meeting, a work team function, a focus group or any other activity in a team or group setting; this is the person who has the drive to do it. It can also be the bully of the group, the one who uses aggression against others in order to achieve their aims and will to fight with others or fight with opposing organisations or groups they project their anger onto. This placement would rise in the military whether they were an administrative assistant or an enlisted Officer climbing up each rank. The regimentation of the group is what they are attracted to and groups that have a hierarchy or a ladder to climb will appeal to them. They will be drawn to areas of social justice and fight for minorities or the environment, humanitarian issues and world peace on its higher level of expression. On the lower side the complete opposite is true potentially in its expression. This position is adept instructing others and likes to lead by example applying their passion for activity and keeping the group focused on its aims, strategies, engagement, social position and ability to serve every member of the group equally and fairly. Dispute resolution or dispute creation in a group attracts these people as it’s about the fight and overcoming the opponent and in the eleventh - opponents come in groups or they come by way of blocking the way to the person realising their hopes and dreams. This position can project their sexual energy into a group and this could well be where swingers began or orgies have their beginnings because here the more the merrier can be the case. It is more likely to be a situation of a myriad of sexual partners all derived from the same group setting or common interest groups they are involved with; providing fertile ground for sexual conquests, introductions and the potential to find someone to get it on with.  

Mars in the Twelfth House

Mars in the twelfth is a position that feels and responds to the anger in the collective. They feel overwhelmed by it and often seek refuge away from any aggression, anger, violence or anything else that is threatening. This is a position of Mars that can feel tired and drained after contact outside of their private space; they come home exhausted and need sleep and isolation to recover their physical energy. This is a result of leaking their physical energy like a petrol tank for everyone they encounter to draw from. They can be scapegoated by other people’s anger if their boundaries are not in check and wind up confused again as to how it happened. These people have strong feelings about fighting for the good of the collective or because of the collective desire to express anger. This is a position that can organise the masses and stir them to action from the privacy of their bedroom or the anonymity of their keyboard. Equally this position is completely comfortable exerting their will and need to fight from the comfort of their private bedroom, office, retreat or private Wi-Fi connection to influence the masses via blogs, videos, posts, newsletters and the like.  This is loner energy in one sense but it does not disconnect them from the collective unconscious within them, they may be alone but they do not act alone, they may be separate but they are impelled by their energy and motivation to connect with all souls from all pasts, presents and futures. They are motivated by things that cannot be seen or touched or clarified or even supported by any evidence other than a vibe – it’s a physical feeling in their body, it’s not necessarily language either. They have an ability to sense danger within the collective and will be attracted to any news containing surviving danger, defending others, wars, disputes and take overs of any kind. This position doesn’t want to lead a small team or put their energy into small enterprises it wants to play with the big players – the multi-nationals, the large institutions, the big NGO’s, The business’s with outlets in every shopping centre in the country or an outlet at every intersection – this energy wants to be part of something large that connects large parts of the community together or serves a wide coverage of humans. Moon on The Ascendant

A Planet on an Angle is a strong statement in the Natal Chart. The Ascendant is intuition and the Moon is intuition - making this placement very sensitive to everything going on around them. The Ascendant is where we wear a mask and wear our clothes. The Moon is our most personal; feelings and emotions and a somewhat private energy. When the Moon is on the Ascendant, the emotional self is difficult to hide from others. This is not a favourable position for a poker player because this placement will wear their feelings in their faces. They will appear to others as a compassionate caring person who can be quite moody. Other people are drawn to Moon on the Ascendant as they feel safe and nurtured in their presence; perfect strangers will open up to the Moon on The Ascendant person.  Their ability to make others feel comfortable is outstanding. As The Ascendant is an axis the opposite side is the Descendant. The Moon is also opposite the Descendant which relates to significant others, partnerships and marriage. The Second House is a Succedent House; “to use”. It is your body which is your first possession. As most of us no longer live in hunter gatherer tribes and we require money to buy food and shelter, money is Second House because it is attached to the sustainability and protection of our bodies. The Second House is also concerned with sentimentality and the traditions that formed the values and beliefs that are held. The person will be more open to the conservative values of the mother. This is a position where emotions are invested in objects, furniture and possessions relating to deeply held feelings, the mother or mothers line of the family. This can make for a dealer in olden wares and antiques or equally a hoarder of everything imaginable. Emotional imbalance can lead to the squandering of money, retail therapy, refusing to give up objects and the wilful destruction of objects attached to ill feeling and emotional pain. Binge eating can be found here as can be fine dining and opulence depending on the emotional condition of the person. Feeling good is attached to food, luxury and the manifestation of actual things that can be touched and seen. Saving for a rainy day is the Moon in the Second; they will do what is needed to secure the safety and protection of their domicile. They will also consider their monetary affairs to be private and are likely to be wealthier than they portray themselves to be. They are unlikely to reveal to anyone any financial problems or lack of cash flow; it will be managed quietly and out of the sight of others. If you are dating a Moon in the Second it’s the old flowers and chocolates routine and a bit of old fashioned courting. Even a Fire Moon will be slowed down in The Second House. In matters of intimacy this is a sensual tactile slow moving position for the Moon which is passive in ‘position’ and prefers to receive than to lead.

The Moon in The Third House

The Third House is a Cadent House; “to understand”. It is all about thinking, talking and moving around that which is local and familiar. The Moon in this position is emotionally affected by whatever is going on around their local neighbourhood. They will be plugged in to what is going on and feel a connection to locals and neighbours. They are also emotionally in tune with siblings and are keenly intuitive about what is going on for close familiar relatives. This position of the Moon needs to talk about their feelings and to analyse their feelings as to why they are feeling the way they are feeling. They can also become quite restless when facing ill feelings or emotional imbalance. Walking can assist them to sort out how they feel and it will cause fatigue so they can sleep, rather than lie awake all night worrying about the emotional situation. They will also go on long drives, train or bus trips to sort through their emotions or just because it makes them feel good to travel around their town. The intuitive Moon has the ability in this position to read the nonverbal communication of others – the body language, the gestures, the look on their face, the vibe they put out and they have the ability to read the language used; through an extraordinary auditory interpreter. It’s almost as if they can hear the spaces between the words and the pauses have as much if not more to say than the language chosen.  Intense or strong emotions can cause this position to gag the tongue, making it difficult to near impossible to articulate or communicate at all. The Moon on The IC

The IC is The Nadir of The Chart; it is The Midnight position in The Natal Chart. It is not seen, it is hidden from the view of others, unless those others are in your Family or very close circle. It is where we are all private; The IC represents our homes and our families. It is the bloodline, gene pool and heritage of the family line. The Sign on The IC will describe one layer in The Family Story, when a planet is on The IC; the Family Story picks up a bit, as the Planet becomes another player in the layers of the Family Story. The Moon is emotions and feelings; it is also the Mother and the Women of the Family in this position. It is a strong indication that the person hails from the matriarchal line of the family. It is a strong position of a caring nurturing creative person who loves being at home. They are not looking for any recognition from the outside world only the acknowledgement from their family and loved ones. As The IC is opposite The MC as it is an axis – the Moon is denoted as being Moon opposite MC. The opposition is the energy of creative/ created conflict that causes action to be taken that is not entirely comfortable. The Sign of the IC is the cusp of The Fourth House. Therefore this House is an Angular House; “to be”. The Moon is where we find comfort for ourselves in the chart and tend to our emotional needs. Here The Moon is most comfortable nestled in the bosom of mother and family in the home. There is a deep emotional attachment to the family home and to the family’s homeland and cultural base. There will be a preference for living with women or in a communal to highly interactive community. There is a strong need to create the sense of family, that being biological or otherwise. This is also a highly intuitive position for the Moon – the ability to sense what is going on without language is strong. Don’t be surprised when this position of the Moon is one step ahead of you. There is a love of family functions, events and gatherings or the coming together of a close knit community. They will also enjoy private club activities as they love to feel that they are part of something, again part of a family. When the Moon is on The Descendant the person is emotionally connected to others, they will seek close relationships and friendships that are fluid and feeling orientated. There will be emotional investments in others which satisfies their need to connect with significant relationships in a meaningful and loving way. There is a strong need to be in a partnership or significant friendship with the Moon on this angle. There will be a tendency to be attracted to people who need to be looked after, mothered or nurtured. They will seek out the needy in relationships. They will form relationships based entirely on the vibe, the feeling, the click, the flow and the intuition. It is the type of position that would believe in love at first sight. As the Moon is opposite the Ascendant they will also project a certain level of neediness in their persona, equally they will project a caring compassionate nature onto those around their immediate vicinity. 

The Moon in The Seventh House

The Sign on The Descendant is the cusp of The Seventh House. Therefore this House is an Angular House; “to be”. The Seventh House is your close circle of friends and your spousal relationship aspirations. The Moon here describes a person who is motivated to show their care and concern for others, especially for those who are closest to them. The emotional disposition is connected to significant relationships, partnerships and marriages. The best friend or the spouse is the emotional barometer of this position. If everything is rosy with their friends and spouse, all is well, on the other hand if either of these relationships becomes rocky the moodiness and changeability of the Moon is harnessed into a downhill emotional low. The Moon is moody for everyone somewhere in the chart, in the seventh the moods are very much affected by the state of affairs in their closest relationship. Emotional balance is felt when the feelings of love in their relationship are harmonious and they feel connected to their partner. This is not a position that will suffer a shell of a marriage to keep up appearances, if they do, do this, they will end up depressed or have a break down. The Moon is intuitive and interprets nonverbal signals therefore in the seventh they apply this talent to their spouse, business partners/ associates and close friendships which means trying to hide how you’re feeling from them is futile. You might get away with it in the short term but like rising damp the Moon will pick up on it and that will be the beginning of the end of that relationship. The Moon in The Eighth House

The Eighth House is a Succedent House; “to use”. The Eighth House is all the other people that are not in your close circle and family. The Moon in this position has the ability to tune into anybody’s feelings and emotions. They also have the ability to sense trends and fads in the collective of the population. The intuitive ability of the Moon here can feel when things are appealing to other people; the emotional barometer is set on the feelings and emotions of others. Like the 12^th House Moon this position will encounter issues discerning whose feelings are actually going on in a situation. There will be a need to establish emotional boundaries for emotional self-protection. There is the capacity for this Moon to face and handle some of the more intense and torrid emotions of others, as they have been there and they get it! To say that these people have been to hell and back with others and within themselves for some would be the understatement of our current century! These are the amazing people that can tune into the emotional pain of others, meet them face to face, then hold out their hand and walk them out of their pain and suffering. The Moon here is quite happy to change their feeling about someone based on their gut feelings and their ability to read what is not being spoken. The Moon senses on a nonverbal level, here it can sense some of the more hidden of hidden feelings, the ability to uncover that which is hidden here is remarkable. It will just come to them, they feel it they don’t think it, some may not even be able to articulate how they know but they do know and they are often spot on. Emotional imbalance will cause them to second guess their gut which will fail and until they bid Persephone a farewell with thanks they will not return to balance from the underworld of their emotional state. This position of The Moon will not suffer a sexless marriage as it is a position that must connect on a sexual level with the person they love. The sexual connection is deep, passionate and binding. Commit adultery to this position and you might as well go to the court and file the papers for divorce yourself! & NO! They will not speak to you again when they find out! This is the position of the Moon that takes the ‘till death do we part’ section of the vows very seriously!

The Moon in The Ninth House

The Ninth House is a Cadent House; “to understand”. The Ninth House is the seeking and gaining of knowledge and the understanding of that knowledge. Here the Moon seeks emotional comfort from understanding by way of books, study and a philosophical or spiritual/religious framework. This position of the Moon wants to know the why behind a feeling, they want to pull the emotions apart and try to find out what is behind them. They do this as a process to work through their feelings and to learn so they do not have to go through it again. This is a ‘learnt it the first time’ position emotionally.  They can work in areas such as psychology & counselling as they are adept in helping others sort through such processes. There is an innate drive in this position to share the feelings and any techniques of dealing with the feelings and emotions so as to grow and develop. Emotional satisfaction will be felt through teaching, instructing, training, nurturing or mentoring others. They will also want to connect with the greater world and all of its cultures through experiences which will compel them to travel the world. There will be a connection to the Goddess of cultures and the icons and rituals of women will appeal to them. The mother’s academic levels will influence the child with this placement. The intuitive Moon here can follow a hunch, a clue, or a fragment and come up with a result as to the where, why and the best solution for everyone to restore harmony. There can be issues for this Moon at times because feelings are not rational and words are useless but they also have the capacity to sense when this is the case and will likely fall back on a story, a Greek myth or archetype to process the emotion through the moral of the story. The Moon in the Ninth will always fall on their feet emotionally where others would fail to extricate themselves from emotionally difficult circumstance the Moon in The Ninth will sail through it. They can do this because they learn from situations and move on or they book airline tickets and they are gone for the summer. They avoid heavy emotional situations they really do prefer light and breezy.

The Moon on The MC

The MC is an important point in The Natal Chart. It represents The Meridian and forms part of The Cross of Matter. The Ascendant Descendant Axis is the other part of The Cross of Matter. It is The Cross of Matter that represents our incarnation upon the earth at birth. The Symbol for the Earth is The Cross inside The Circle; which is the Cross of Matter on The Natal Chart. The MC is the life direction and purpose of the Chart; it is the highest point in the Chart and therefore the most public place in the chart. Planets on The MC stand out and are noticed by everyone. When the Moon is on the MC there is an ability to connect with the public in an appealing sensitive and emotionally connected manner. The MC has long been associated with career which it is but it is the aspiration and the reputation that is described by the MC. Moon on the MC will be attracted to careers that involve people and community orientated vocations. Care Giving, Nursing, Women, Children and Parental Services are all realms of The Moon. Breeding pets/livestock, plants/ propagation, land management and farming are also lunar themes. The Moon is also opposite The IC/ Nadir of The Chart which is a conflict between the demands of the home and family verses the demands of the career that takes us away from the home. Moon on The MC would benefit from a balance between the public and private life. Working more from home/ in private than at the employer’s workplace would suit them best. The Women’s line of the family and the intuition are linked when The Moon is on this Axis.

The Moon in The Tenth House

The Sign on The MC is the cusp of The Tenth House. Therefore this House is an Angular House; “to be”. As the Tenth House is before the Meridian Planets in the Tenth House are not as high as those on the Meridian/MC. Planets in The Tenth House do stand out and are seen as The Tenth House is the most public house; it is associated with being out there, being seen and being noticed. The Tenth House is where we aspire to achieve our career and work aims. The Moon in The Tenth House will be seen as, and have a reputation for being a caring sensitive compassionate person. As the Moon is a private energy and here it’s in a public position they will not be doing what they are doing to be noticed, they likely feel a bit uncomfortable about it but over time they will just accept that they get noticed by others for all the efforts they go to, to help others feel comfortable. They will love to spend time with people out and about. The Moon wants to belong and here they want to belong to a social group of some sort as The Moon in The Tenth Loves Company, it makes them feel loved, protected and secure. They will do well in service industries and tending to the needs of the employees, workforce, group, community organisation or a client group. This position of the Moon would do well in Human Resource Management, Recruitment Services, Real Estate, Childcare and Community Services. The emotions and feelings are connected to social status and the fulfilment of goals. This position feels emotional balance when they are in charge of situations or given the autonomy to work in private or without direct supervision. Emotional imbalance or ill feelings can cause a pulling back from public life to the point of not leaving the house, the abandonment of life aims and the seeming loss of capacity to fulfil the expectations of others. The Emotions can feel overwhelmed in Public places if they do not feel comfortable, as The Moon is intuitive and sensitive these warning signals ought be listened to and acted upon so as to feel safe and to maintain your emotional wellbeing. Our feelings not only nurture us, comfort us, give us sensations of love but they protect us and the Moon in an angular House does this most ardently. In the Tenth it protects others primarily but it does this so as to protect the emotional investment of the self. This is The Axis in action.

The Moon in The Eleventh

The Eleventh House is a Succedent House; “to use”. The Eleventh House is groups of people, friendships, social networks, hopes and dreams. When the Moon is in The Eleventh the emotional disposition is connected to friends and the overall feelings going on in the groups they are involved in. The American Sitcom “Friends” is such a Moon in The Eleventh Series of Seasons. The Moon in The Eleventh is the emotional barometer of the group; they can sense the mood of the group and can be the one who puts voice to what is going on. This can lead to discussion, analysis and problem solving the situation or it can lead to The Moon person being scapegoated, outed as a whistle blower and ostracised until the truth comes out and they are eventually vindicated. There can be a wide variety of friends and groups of people that the Moon associates with in this position – a group or a friend for every mood. The Moon is changeable and in this Air House it likes variety and it can ‘work’ a crowd like a conductor conducts the orchestra. The ability to tune into the tone in the room in a warm and engaging manner is a talent of The Moon in The Eleventh. They will also be very emotionally connected to making their dreams come true, bringing about their hopes and fulfilling their desires. The type of partner they seek will be a friend first as companionship is as important as good sex to this position. They marry their best friend and they have other best friends that they would never sleep with in an intimate manner. This position is concerned with issues that relate to The Sisterhood and Brotherhood of Humanity and they will find satisfaction and good feelings from feeling part of any group who are trying to make the world a better place to live in. There is a core sense to The Moon in The Eleventh that all humans need to care about each other – the duty of care towards others is not only entrenched in law it is entrenched in The Eleventh House Moon. Unlike the duty of care found in the Tenth House Moon which is very much about the law behind the duty, The Eleventh House Moon is more about the responsibility of being a caring human towards other human’s part of the duty of care. The Eleventh House Moon does not need a law to compel them to care for others it’s instinctual to them.

The Moon in The Twelfth House

The Twelfth House is a Cadent House; “to understand”.  The Twelfth House is considered the most hidden part of the chart. I would put it as the second most hidden part of the chart. The Fourth house is the most hidden from view in the sense of privacy and being tucked away behind closed doors. The Fourth House relates to the self-whilst the Twelfth House is above The Horizon and therefore is concerned with others. Planets in the Twelfth may not even be seen when you are in the person’s home. They are hidden from view. When The Moon is in the Twelfth the emotional disposition is hidden from others yet it is tied to the feelings and issues of others. As the energy of the Twelfth House wants to merge and become at one with others, with spirit, with God, with Nature or by arriving at the end of a bottle of Scotch there is an innate sense to this position that nothing is separate from anything else. This can make it difficult to discern where all those feelings, impressions and emotions are coming from. They can feel overwhelmed by the emotional temperament of the collective. The Twelfth House rules the collective unconscious and the Moon is intuitive and has the ability to tap into the trends, fads, issues, concerns of the greater population of the Nation, World or Universe. Some will have very keen intuitive, perceptive and highly tuned sensory abilities. This comes with blessings on the one hand and difficulties on the other. There will be a need to establish emotional boundaries so as to protect the self from the onslaught of the feelings of others bombarding their mood and emotional balance. This is often why they shut themselves away from other people and have a strong preference for spending time alone. Once they can establish boundaries that work like the force fields of space crafts in science fiction they will deal with crowds and social functions without feeling completely drained by the time they get home. Spiritual practices, religious beliefs, talismans and good luck charms may all be effective for this Moon to feel protected and create the boundaries they need for their own emotional health and wellbeing.
